At home with Megan McCluskie

At home with Megan McCluskie

Megan is currently renovating her seaside home in Folkestone. She explains the importance of creating a welcoming family home and how she uses antiques in her home.

How would you describe your interiors style?

I like interiors that mix old and new, comfort and practicality. Home is where I'm with the people that mean the most to me in the whole world so I like our interiors to reflect us as a family and help make our home a welcoming space where friends can come to play. We are nearing the end of renovating but I know our interiors will continually evolve.

How do you use antiques in your home?

It’s exciting to give an antique piece of furniture a new home. Every room in our house has a few antique pieces. They always bring the most joy and can be great conversation starters. I think the atmosphere of a home is really important and the look and feel of antiques can immediately help make a space feel more familiar and comfortable.

What do you love most about buying antiques?

I’m a huge fan of ‘the find’ so I love going to antique shops, fairs and charity shops. You never know what treasure someone has passed on and there is a certain thrill to it. Online antique dealers like Zebra Homeware find the most magic items and are a main source for me. We live by the sea and our kids have become little treasure hunters too, spending many an afternoon combing the beach for shells, stones and sea glass.

What does home mean to you?

Home means family for me. I live with my husband and three little ones aged 5 and under so our home has to be practical and functional for young family life and somewhere we can feel incredibly safe, loved and comfortable. I appreciate our kids will want to leave home and explore the world as they grow up, but I'd love for our family home to be one they grow old wanting to get back to, even if just for big Sunday dinners.
